A community of Benedictine monks took up residence there and immediately enjoyed high consideration thanks to their reformist and polemical spirit towards the rampant corruption of the clergy and who quickly assumed a prominent religious, political, social and economic role. Already in the first decades, numerous spontaneous donations of large properties ensued, by the aristocracy and modest plots of land from poor farmers, who sought shelter and protection in a turbulent historical era. Badia a Coltibuono thus achieved a considerable ownership structure which, uniquely, was never dispersed or divided up in the centuries to follow. The Vallombrosan monks, attentive scholars and sensitive to the valorization of the resources offered by nature, gave new impetus to the cultivation of the land, in particular to the vine and the olive tree, already practiced in this area by the Etruscans and Romans since 300 BC. They are also responsible for the introduction of the cultivation of the silver fir and the chestnut tree; tree species still present in the woods surrounding the abbey. Alongside agricultural activity, they dedicated themselves to studies, hospitality and also to the care of the sick. The name they chose was from the Latin of the time: Badia a Cultusboni, or good worship, good culture, good agriculture and good harvest. In its archives, the name Chianti appears, for the first time in history, in a document from the end of the 12th century.
