And in those years, very few were embarking on a winemaking adventure in Montalcino. Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and men who have believed in it for decades, Mastrojanni is one of the most respected Brunello di Montalcino wineries among connoisseurs. These places have been sparsely populated and undercultivated throughout human history: the land is therefore pristine, clean, free of any pollutants that, by human hands, could have disfigured it. In 1975, the lawyer Gabriele Mastrojanni purchased the San Pio and Loreto estates here and decided to plant the first vines, some of which still produce our wines today. Others before him, starting with the pioneer Biondi-Santi, had had the same experience, and the land had clearly responded that the best grape variety for these soils was Sangiovese Grosso. Mastrojanni, wanting to make a great Brunello, planted almost exclusively Sangiovese. During those same years, Maurizio Castelli, still our winemaker today, became the winery's primary consultant. The Mastrojanni family, who lived in Rome and occasionally visited Montalcino, decided to entrust Andrea Machetti with the company's development full-time. Andrea began in 1992, and his dedicated work allowed Mastrojanni to grow both internationally and in production, perhaps beyond the lawyer's initial dream. Today, he is a key figure in the company and the Illy Group. In 1992, Andrea Machetti took over the reins of the winery, transforming it into one of Montalcino's most respected producers.A man of few words, Andrea is now intimately familiar with every vine in the winery. He's always there, overseeing every detail, and he knows that this is the only way to make great wine: to be at his service. Maurizio Castelli, a world-renowned winemaker for his great wines, is like Andrea and, like all of us, an "anti-interventionist": he tries to let the wine evolve naturally, dictated by its nature. But it's clear that a winemaker is like a doctor, and must recognize when there's a problem and know how to treat it. His trick, like that of the best doctors, is "prevention." That is, working ahead of time, through careful and continuous presence on the winery and systematic checks to preserve the wine. Thanks to the approach established by Andrea and Maurizio, Mastrojanni wines continue to be a prime example of the Montalcino region.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0401/6616/2598/products/BrunellodiMontalcinoDOCG2016Mastrojanni75cl_Toscana.png?v=1716904700
