Their project took shape in Pontassieve, just a few kilometers from the vibrant Florence of the time, which a few years earlier had been the provisional capital of the Kingdom of Italy. Ambitious, skilled, and visionary, the Ruffinos had chosen a location for their winery convenient for transportation, right astride the railway—one of the very first in Italy—and this helped sustain the company's already cosmopolitan spirit. Modern and innovative, Ruffino wine quickly established itself as a leading winemaking force of the time, reaching a level of popularity beyond Italy's borders. It earned accolades in France, such as the Bordeaux Gold Medal in 1895, and the appreciation of great names like Giuseppe Verdi, as well as that of its people, with whom Ruffino demonstrated closeness from the very beginning. The first change of ownership occurred in 1913, when the Folonari family took over the reins of the project. After surviving the difficult years of the Great War, driven by the Folonaris' foresight, Ruffino wine made its way to America, where it was so appreciated that it was even sold in pharmacies to overcome the barriers of Prohibition. In the 1920s, Ruffino's history overlapped with that of Chianti: the two Consortia of Chianti and Chianti Classico were established, and on these denominations, Ruffino built its identity and founded its extraordinary development. The first Riserva Ducale was released in 1927, a name that pays homage to the favor of the Duke of Aosta, who had already fallen in love with this memorable "stravecchio" wine in 1890, appointing Ruffino as supplier to the Royal House and "reserving" a batch. During World War II, the now-large Ruffino plant was mistaken for a production hub due to its location astride the railroad and its heavy bombing. It was a terrible time, but Ruffino had the strength to recover and rebuild itself along with the entire country. Ruffino's postwar rebirth was symbolized by the birth of Riserva Ducale Oro in 1947, the expression of a marvelous vintage and proof of how the finest Chiantis could defy time.In the 1950s and 1960s, Ruffino was a famous brand, and the stars of the era didn't mind a visit (and a photograph) at the winery. These were the years of "La Dolce Vita," and Ruffino immediately positioned itself as an expression of that authentic Italian art of living that the entire world was beginning to admire. The pleasure of being together, conviviality, and the joy of living have since characterized Ruffino wines, whether at the center of simple wooden tables or gracing the tablecloths of fine restaurants. Only a devastating natural event momentarily interrupted their trajectory: on November 4, 1966, the Arno River overflowed its banks, and with it the Sieve, also victimizing the many bottles that would be seen floating in the murky waters of the flood. The following decades were further marked by development and innovation: the beloved fiasco gave way to the "Florentine bottle," and Ruffino was awarded the very first label of the new Chianti DOCG, "number 1": AAA00000001. But the change affected strategic choices above all: it began a process of acquiring important Tuscan estates in the most suitable areas—Chianti, Montalcino, Montepulciano—embellished with villas and castles, but above all, with estate-owned vineyards. In 2011, Tenimenti Ruffino became part of the Constellation Group, strengthening its international vocation while maintaining that touch of Italianness that profoundly defines it.
